** Spot gold XAU= up 1.2% at $3,054.99, just shy of recent all-time high of $3,057.21, after U.S. tariffs on auto imports

** Newmont NEM.N and Barrick Gold GOLD.N up just under 2% on the day

** ADRs of South Africa's Gold Fields GFI.N, AngloGold Ashanti AU.N and Harmony Gold HMY.N up 1.5%-2%

** ADRs of Canadia's Agnico Eagle Mines AEM.N and Kinross Gold KGC.N up about 2%
